This year at NAB, BDI co-exhibited with Leyard Opto-Electronic CO., LTD, makers of the stunning new 1.9mm LED video wall. This is the tightest resolution, scalable LED screen being offered today, and was a genuine show-stopper for thousands of attendees. The wall was a massive 27 ft. wide x 8 ft. high.

BDI installed a very custom anchor desk into the exhibit, it featured polished Plexiglas tops in smoked, clear and neon blue, with custom machined aluminum hardware and a lightbox face for branding. The setup included a studio camera and lighting so that attendees could see and touch a “studio” environment in the South Hall of the convention center.

BDI is a full service, turn-key, studio set design and build company located in southern California. BDI is a distributor / dealer for the Leyard LED video systems in the Broadcast Industry, and offers installation as well. Our Logistics team successfully installs projects worldwide and is ready to make your project a success !

KSL recently partnered with BDI to develop a brand new turn-key studio set for their newscast.

42″ Orion MPDP

CORIOmaster video processing system

9mm GLIC LED video display panels

KSL wanted to break away from a more traditional local news cast. They wanted the versatility of multiple looks all within one studio instead of separate smaller venues. An asymmetrical design was created working togetherwith Scott Jones the Production Services Director and his team of talented graphic and engineering staff. The final design included over 75 low resolution LED panels in two configurations forming changeable digital backgrounds as well as (3) over (3) 60” hi- resolution MPDP plasma video wall and two 42” MPDP displays in the front of the desk. RGB light boxes complimented the video displays giving KSL the ability to change the overall feel of the set with color as well. They now have multiple weather, sports and special reports area’s to bring stories to the viewers all with various video sources. An interview area was integrated into the design that also converts into a weekend sports program.

KSL premiered a week or two before the elections and was able to show the flexibility to transform the set into a distinctively different election set all by changing the colors and video displays.

WFTS, Tampa, FL – Studio and open newsroom was originally designed by BDI in 1995, winning an Emmy, BDA Gold and a National Architecture Award for its efforts. In 2012, BDI retooled the Weather Center and Multi-Performance sets, while upgrading their main anchor desk and making necessary upgrades to the open newsroom as well.

WEWS, Cleveland, OH – Complete redesign of News, Weather and Multi-Performance sets and an upgrade to their newsroom and assignment desk. WEWS is a legacy news station in the Cleveland market. Although management wanted a bold new HD set, they did not want to alienate their news audience by creating a futuristic, Starship Enterprise-type environment. The final result was contemporary, warm and inviting. WEWS is currently using Ignite, an automated production system. Exact camera angles from BDI were essential early in the development of the project.

WPTV, West Palm Beach, FL – Station management wanted their new open newsroom environment to reinforce their HD leadership. BDI’s new design concepts accommodated a much more flexible and versatile set environment without a lot of clutter. The design is simple, clean and contemporary with a distinctive “South Florida feel…”

2011 – 2012: Broadcast Design International, Inc. was commissioned by Central China Television out of Beijing to help develop their global brand in several emerging markets around the world. Each location challenged our team to think outside the box as we created functional working studio environments within existing office complexes. Turn-key services included coordinating the massive logistical challenge of working with local customs and vendors to ship and install the project at each location. Sets were fabricated in the USA, airfreighted to each location, and installed by a BDI installation team. Our team worked with locally hired contractors on the tenant improvements in each facility before scenic elements could be installed. The results were on time, on budget and developed with high quality, synonymous with a BDI project.

BDI developed a complete open newsroom environment for SMG in their main facilities’ 5 story lobby. The design was fully integrated in and around the building’s structural columns and multi-floor architecture. These structural elements helped lend support for a custom grid package design, also becoming an integral part of this sophisticated environment. SMG’s existing long and narrow News Ingest room was repurposed to become an important part of the background from the main news desk.

BDI incorporated a large multi-performance video wall display and 103” touch screen, seamlessly integrated and built around the lobby’s glass elevator. This allowed the design to merge in harmony with the existing structure. Positioning of the large electronic wall gave full support to multiple set venues within the open studio and newsroom, including talent “walk and talk” interaction with the video wall and 103” touchscreen. A stand-up area was also designed for SMG to utilize the very latest in Immersive Graphics technology. A relaxed, yet sophisticated interview venue was strategically positioned to also use the video wall along with the main newsroom, showing the humanity of SMGs newscasts.

SMG / Dragon TV gets a daily news audience of approximately 150-200 million viewers!

TRK UKRAINE, the largest broadcaster headquartered in Kiev, lead a global search to find the right partner to help develop a custom open newsroom and multi-studio environment. The project was centered around an existing shopping mall, needing extensive tenant improvements to convert the space into a functional, world class studio and open newsroom. The main news sets are located within a six-story atrium so TRK needed some creative solutions for lighting grid design. BDI developed a contemporary project, complete with the latest color changing LED properties and multi-purpose video walls allowing for maximum flexibility within any part of the broadcast day. BDI’s open newsroom design seamlessly integrated a flowing and functional space for TRK’s audience to see a daily “behind the scenes” look as part of a sophisticated backdrop. A working control room was also integrated and part of BDI’s facility space plan. According to Marek Loose, Director of New Business Development for TRK… “We did not think this project would be possible given the space we had to work within, but BDI made the impossible, possible…”
